Back to Basics Designing

You have seen the posts and articles, or heard talk of new Web standards, Web2.0. This is changing or that is changing. A visitor to your site does not care about these or any coding standards. They want what they have always wanted, and that is:

1. understanding your site's purpose within 3 to 4 seconds
2. text which they can read in standard fonts
3. content which addresses their concerns and answers their questions
4. traditional navigation links that are easy to find and follow
5. short forms and easy checkout (e-commerce)
6. no linkrot (dead links), bugs, or content errors
7. pages which load in 4 seconds or less

Anytime you feel tempted to add a new feature or widget, consider the viewer to your site. Will he or she really benefit from those changes? Will he or she gain anything? How is it any better than clear text explaining your site and its purpose.

Do not underestimate the power of a simple design, well-composed text, easy navigation, and quick-loading pages.
